Attention Moms: Taking Zofran While Pregnant May Cause Birth Defects Like Cleft Palate and Heart Defects
We hear you: You watched what you ate, took up low-impact exercise and even played calming music throughout your pregnancy… you did everything and more in your power to keep your unborn child healthy and happy. What was out of your power was the medication you took to combat morning sickness. You may even have been told it was safe for you and your unborn baby. But there is more to the story.
Women who took the anti-nausea drug Zofran during pregnancy may be at increased risk for babies with serious birth defects.
We don’t like the medical term “birth defects,” either, so let’s just say it turns out that taking Zofran during pregnancy may cause needless, expensive and unnecessary health burdens on your baby, including:
- Cleft palate or cleft lip
- Heart defects – specifically septal heart defects like atrial septal defect (ASD) and ventricular septal defect (VSD)
Unfortunately, mothers were not warned of the serious risks of birth defects when taking Zofran. In fact, many expectant mothers may have even been told that Zofran was a safe medication to help them cope with morning sickness. The truth is, the risks associated with Zofran have allegedly been known for some time.
Our firm is highly regarded for helping mothers fight back against injuries to their babies. We represented parents who fought against lead in baby food, parents who continue to fight dangerous PCBs in schools and mothers who, in similar fashion to Zofran, gave birth to children with serious issues after taking the anti-seizure drug Depakote.
It’s true that if you or a mother you know took Zofran while pregnant and had a child with “birth defects,” filing a lawsuit will not magically make everything okay. However, it’s the first step among many to protect our children and moms like you. Your child may have been seriously hurt by a drug that you trusted. We can’t let them get away with it.
