Get the Facts on Xarelto Side Effects

Xarelto lawsuits are being filed across the country, alleging that the manufacturer of the blood-thinning drug, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, and the co-marketer of the medication, Bayer Healthcare, failed to properly warn doctors and patients of the drug’s side effects. Here is a brief look at some of the more serious – and potentially fatal – complications.

Xarelto has been linked with severe internal bleeding in several parts of the body, including the abdomen, brain and spine. Unlike other blood thinners, if a person suffers a bleeding episode while taking Xarelto there is no way to stop that bleeding. For example, if a person is taking warfarin, bleeding can be controlled through the administration of high doses of Vitamin K. No such option exists for those who take Xarelto.

Abdominal Bleeding

Any sort of bleeding in the abdominal region can be extremely serious. This type of bleed is often characterized by vomiting or coughing up blood that is similar in appearance to coffee grounds. It can result in the pooling of blood and a lack of blood flow to vital organs, which can lead to death.

Brain Hemorrhages

The brain has vessels that supply oxygenated blood to the organ. If a brain bleed occurs, a stroke can occur due to a lack of blood as well as oxygen. This can lead to brain damage, slurred speech, an inability to walk or even move, impaired vision, numbness of the arms, face or legs, and other complications. Since Xarelto is an anticoagulant, a clot cannot form to stop the bleeding.

Spinal Bleeding

If a patient needs to have a spinal procedure and is taking Xarelto, uncontrollable bleeding can take place that can result in paralysis due to the pooling of blood around the spinal cord.
