Baron and Budd Investigating Potential Xarelto Lawsuits

Blood-Thinner Allegedly Associated With Strokes, Blood Clots, Hemorrhaging (Internal Bleeding) and Other Potentially Deadly Health Problems

DALLAS (November 3, 2014) – The attorneys at the national law firm of Baron and Budd have been investigating potential lawsuits involving the blood thinner Xarelto, a prescription drug distributed in the United States by Johnson & Johnson subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Several patients have reported serious health problems after using the drug, including blood clots, strokes, kidney and liver damage, and severe internal bleeding – a sometimes fatal condition.

“Our firm is ready to fight on behalf of patients harmed by Xarelto to hold the manufacturer and distributors responsible for putting potentially dangerous drugs on the market without properly warning patients and doctors,” said Stephen Blackburn. “We understand that it can be difficult for patients and families dealing with these severe side effects and we want to help them get the financial help they need to cover expensive medical bills.”

Xarelto was first approved for use in 2011 and quickly became popular. It is intended to treat existing blood clots in patients and also prevent blood clots from forming. However, Xarelto has also been linked to internal bleeding, including gastrointestinal, epidural and brain hemorrhages. While several types of thinners can result in these and other issues, most of these conditions can be reversed by immediately administering frozen plasma or high doses of vitamin K to thicken the blood. These options are not available with Xarelto.

Xarelto is part of a new generation of anti-coagulants touted as being superior to Warfarin (marketed as Coumadin), which has been in use since the mid 1950s. Warfarin users need to be regularly monitored by a doctor, while Xarelto’s manufacturer claims its users blood work does not need to be regularly checked. In August 2014, the Journal of Neurosurgery published a study that showed the use of Xarelto and other new-generation medications could lead to irreversible brain bleeding.
