After Bayer had stopped sales of the controversial birth control device outside the United States last year, it will now stop the sales of it in the United States.
According to the Associated Press, the company is stating the reason behind it is weak sales. However, there have been severe health complications associated with Essure, including migration of the device as well as extreme pain.
Thousands of women across the United States have suffered severe complications after using the Essure permanent birth control device. This device is basically a small metal coil that is implanted into each fallopian tube. They have reported a variety of problems, including perforation of the fallopian tubes, extreme pain during intercourse, migration of the device and others.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration ordered Bayer to add a black box warning to its labeling to inform patients about potentially serious – and in some cases even debilitating – side effects in February 2016. In addition, the FDA required that a new clinical trial be performed in order to get a better picture of the risks associated with Essure.
