Japanese drug manufacturer, Eisai Inc. recently agreed to a voluntary withdraw of its weight loss management drugs, Belviq and Belviq XR, from the market at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”). The FDA made the withdraw request after analysis of the data from a large clinical trial showed that patients were diagnosed with cancer at an increased rate over patients that took the placebo.
WHAT IS BELVIQ/BELVIQ XR?
Belviq is a tablet and Belviq XR is an extended release version of the drug intended for weight loss management in obese or overweight adults. BELVIQ AND CANCER
Eisai Inc. conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial with 12,000 participants over a five-year period (called the CAMELLIA-TIMI 61 trial). The results of the clinical trial showed that the participants taking Belviq/Belviq XR had an increased occurrence of cancer compared to those taking the placebo. The most prevalent cancers found in the study were pancreatic, colorectal, and lung cancer.
