New Talcum Powder Lawsuit Begins in St. Louis

Earlier this year, two juries in the same St. Louis court awarded plaintiffs more than $120 million in talcum powder lawsuits. Now, a new lawsuit has begun in the same court.

The cases involved plaintiffs who claimed they developed ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder for feminine hygiene. The two plaintiffs claimed they used the product for decades without being told of the potential dangers.

In February 2016, the family of an Alabama woman who passed away due to ovarian cancer won a $72 million verdict from a St. Louis jury. Then, in May, another jury in the same court awarded $5 million in damages to a South Dakota woman in a similar lawsuit, adding another $50 million in punitive damages.

The plaintiffs in the case sued Johnson & Johnson on the grounds that the company failed to warn consumers about the dangers of products containing talc. In the case that resulted in the $72 million verdict, the jury found that the pharmaceutical giant was liable for conspiracy, negligence and fraud.

The newest case involves a similar claim. A California woman said that she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012 after decades of talcum powder use. She is also alleging that Johnson & Johnson marketed and manufactured the product in a negligent fashion.
