We Didn’t Do This to Ourselves – How The Statin Drug Lipitor Derailed Our Healthy Efforts with Type 2 Diabetes

There is a stigma associated with the development of type 2 diabetes.

The stigma with type 2 diabetes is: You Did This to Yourself.

But that could not be further from the truth.

The truth is that if you are a woman and have a low body max index (BMI) and developed type 2 diabetes while taking the statin drug Lipitor, chances are it was not you who did this  – it was Lipitor.

A popular drug used as a preventative measure against heart attacks by thousands of Americans each year, Lipitor is one of those drugs that people started taking to stay healthy. Why risk the threat of heart attack when I can do everything in my power to prevent the attack from occurring? That’s the thought that many people taking Lipitor were first motivated by – the thought that they ought to do everything in their power to be and stay healthy.

Once they were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, confusion arouse. Many of the women who developed type 2 diabetes while taking Lipitor had no early indication of developing diabetes, their weight was within the healthy range and they had no family history of diabetes. These people ate their one apple a day, they ate their extra helpings of vegetables, they exercised and tried to the best of their abilities to do all those things we’ve learned are important for our health: Stay away from mindless snacking; Stay away from fried food; Avoid refined sugars like corn syrup and table sugar.

We do our best. We do what we can. And then we develop type 2 diabetes, a condition we thought we had very little risk of developing – all the while trying to prevent heart attacks and other heart injuries? No, that’s not how it is supposed to work.

It is stunning to hear that you developed type 2 diabetes out of the blue. Did you somehow let your healthy efforts slide? You may feel as if you had something to do with the development of your type 2 diabetes, maybe it was the fact that you have not had the time to go on your daily walks, maybe it was – who knows – that recent habit of late night sugary cereal snacks.

Your head can spin around in circles trying to figure out why, out of what seems like nowhere, you developed type 2 diabetes and are now tied to a life of monitoring your blood glucose levels and sugar intake lest more serious damages ensue.

Go ahead and ask the questions – but we have the answer. If you developed type 2 diabetes while taking Lipitor, Lipitor is most likely to blame. Take your guilt out of the picture to better focus on the real culprit, and the real solution.

There are many other statin drugs out there that could have helped you prevent cardiac injuries just as well as Lipitor. For whatever reason, you started taking Lipitor – it is a very popular and well-known drug after all. And you may now have to cope with your type 2 diabetes diagnosis forever. But if we speak up together, we may be able to help others before they develop type 2 diabetes at the hands of the statin drug Lipitor.

It’s pretty simple: We believe that while we do our part, the pharmaceutical manufacturers must do theirs.

After all, it’s not always easy to run that extra lap or turn down that delicious dessert at the end of the day. We did the work and we took care of ourselves to the best of our abilities. All we ask is that the makers of Lipitor do the same.
